We're really excited to present a jam-packed programme of workshops in all aspects of theatre and drama for the Spring Term which starts the week of 22nd January and takes place at the Anno Santo Hotel, Salthill, Galway.
Our six-week Acting 101 course for beginners will take place on Monday evenings. We've split our continuation level The Next Stage into two separate classes - one on Voice, Text and Professional Skills which will be taught by Sarah O'Toole on Thursdays, and another on Physical Theatre and Devising which will be taught by James Riordan on Tuesdays. Each will end in a public showcase performance, and there is also a special package discount, if you want to do them both and really fancy pushing your theatre skills this Autumn.
Fresh from their production of “Middletown” at the Town Hall this Christmas, our Advanced Performance Group will meet on Wednesdays, and will be working towards another full-scale show. This group is for students with some experience (maybe you’ve done a couple of classes before), so send us an expression of interest if you’d like to take part. All core courses are based in the Anno Santo Hotel, Salthill and take place from 7 to 10pm.
There will also be a weekend workshop in Acting for Camera with acclaimed director Linda Bhreathnach on 3/4 February, and also in Improv 101 with Darragh O’Brien on 24/25 March. These will also take place at Anno Santo, from 10am to 5pm. There is a special package price for those who do both weekend workshops and a discount for students on core courses.
For those in need of professional headshots to kickstart their career, we have organised two group Headshot Sessions with photographer Steve Maye on 11th and 13th February at a very reduced price.

Our Acting 101 course is on Monday nights, from 7pm to 10pm, and runs for 6 weeks. This course is for beginners or those who haven’t done it in a while and are looking to get back into it in a relaxed, enjoyable way. We cover all the basics through various games, exercises and improvisations and the main focus is on developing confidence, getting comfortable performing in front of others, learning how to create characters and settings and most importantly, having fun.
This term we are running two of these courses. The first starts on 22nd January and is taught by John Rogers. The second starts 19th February and is taught by Sarah O'Toole. Cost is €160/150, with an early bird rate of €145/135 if you book before 16th January.
***SPECIAL PACKAGE DISCOUNT OF €500/460 (STUDENT/UNEMPLOYED) IF YOU BOOK TWO OF THESE COURSES TOGETHER***
The Next Stage: Physical Theatre and Devising on Tuesday nights starting 23rd January from 7pm to 10pm, is an intensive course which focuses helping students to explore and develop how they use their bodies on stage. The course takes place over 9 weeks, but will have the full 12 classes, as there will be extra sessions on dates agreed by group at the outset in order to rehearse for the final performance.
We will encounter different theories and practices of physical theatre from rhythm and movement to body and voice work. We will explore text, lifting the words from the page and taking them into our creative bodies through a series of exercises and assignments. Through Devising we will learn how to work as an effective ensemble, to listen and lead and to explore new ways to create character, story and dramatic tension.
The course will end in a devised showcase performance in the Town Hall Studio on 23rd and 24th March. Some acting is experience required. Cost is €300/280 (student/unwaged) with an early bird rate of €280/260 if you book before 16th January. Tutor is James Riordan.
The Next Stage: Voice, Text and Professional Skills on Thursday nights starting 15th January, from 7pm to 10pm, is an intensive course which focuses on helping students to explore and develop their voices and enhance their skills in working with dramatic text. The course takes place over 9 weeks, but will have the full 12 classes, as there will be extra sessions on dates agreed by group at the outset in order to rehearse for the final performance.
We will start by using an established theatre text as a jumping-off point for this work, and then diversify into a selection of scenes and monologues which will be performed as a showcase in the Town Hall Studio on 23rd and 24th March. We will also have a workshop on audition skills and professional development. Some acting experience and an interest in the acting industry is required. Cost is €300/280 (student/unwaged) with an early bird rate of €280/260 if you book before 16th January. Tutor is Sarah O'Toole.
Our Advanced Performance Group will meet on Wednesday nights from 7-10pm. This is by application only and is for experienced students who would like to get involved in a full-length production of a play which will be shown in the Town Hall Studio from 10th to 12th May. Please email outlining your experience and the play itself will be chosen based on the core group. Starts 14th February. Runs 12 weeks with some extra rehearsals at the end to be agreed with group. Cost is €300/280 (student/unemployed) with an early bird rate of €280/260 if you book before 31st January. Tutor is Sarah O'Toole, with some extra workshops from other practitioners.
ACTING FOR CAMERA
This weekend with acclaimed director Linda Bhreathnach will cover all the basics in screen performance and is perfect for those with a couple of classes under their belt or with some theatrical experience but who are looking to move into working on screen. The first day will focus on mastering techniques to give students more confidence in front of camera, moving in developing a short piece which will be filmed the following day with a screening and discussion at the end.
Winner of the Rising Star Award at Galway Film Fleadh 2016, Linda’s films Adulting and Native (starring Patrick Bergin) have been selected to screen at film festivals all around the world. With acting credits such as Ros na Rún and Corp agus Anam, Linda’s experience on both sides of the camera enables her to demystify the technicalities while keeping a keen awareness of the performer’s needs.

HEADSHOTS WITH STEVE MAYE
A good professional-quality headshot is key to finding work as an actor as it gives casting directors a clear idea of what roles to audition you for and, very importantly, creates a good impression. However, one on one photography sessions can be expensive, especially when one is starting out and it can be hard to know which photograph to choose.
With this in mind, we have set up two group photography sessions with the super-talented and stylish Steve Maye on Sunday 11th February 2 - 5pm and Tuesday 13th February 7-10pm. Participants book a half hour slot, and, with help from Sarah O'Toole, choose two high-quality images which Steve will process and prepare. Cost is €50 and session is booked through Galway Actors Workshop.
