This summer, Galway Actors Workshop are pleased to present a jam-packed programme of workshops in all aspects of theatre and drama. We cater to adults at all levels of experience - from those who’ve always wanted to “give it a try” to professional actors who would like to learn some new skills. Our Improvers courses all have some form of theatre performance at the end, giving students valuable stage experience. We also organise a discounted group theatre visit.
As well as new course in Physical Theatre & Devising, our new tutor James Riordan will also be offering a brand-new course Acting in Irish, with the aim of giving actors with "school Irish" to enhance their employability.
We also have something for those with an interest in mindfulness and personal development, as well as budding playwrights.

Our Introduction to Acting course is on Monday nights, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. This course is for beginners or those who haven’t done it in a while and are looking to get back into it in a relaxed, enjoyable way. We cover all the basics through various games, exercises and improvisations and the main focus is on developing confidence, getting comfortable performing in front of others, learning how to create characters and settings and most importantly, having fun. Starts 1st May. Runs 12 weeks. Cost is €250/225, with an early bird rate of €235/210 if you book before 19th April. Tutors are Sarah O'Toole and Darragh O'Brien.

The Next Stage: Physical Theatre and Devising on Tuesday nights starting 9th May from 6.30 to 9.30pm, is an intensive course which focuses helping students to explore and develop how they use their bodies on stage. Over 12 weeks, we will encounter different theories and practices of physical theatre from rhythm and movement to body and voice work. We will explore text, lifting the words from the page and taking them into our creative bodies through a series of exercises and assignments. Through Devising we will learn how to work as an effective ensemble, to listen and lead and to explore new ways to create character, story and dramatic tension. The course will end in a devised showcase performance in an established Galway theatre venue. Some acting experience is required. The Next Stage: Voice, Text and Professional Skills on Wednesday nights starting 10th May, from 6.30 to 9.30pm, is an intensive course which focuses on helping students to explore and develop their voices and enhance their skills in working with dramatic text. Over 12 weeks, we will use an established text as a jumping-off point for this work, and the course will end in a showcase performance in an established Galway theatre venue where students will perform a scene and a monologue. We will also have a workshop on audition skills and professional development. Some acting experience and an interest in the acting industry is required. Our Play Performance course is on Tuesday nights from 6.30-9.30pm. This is by application only and is for experienced students who would like to get involved in a full-length production of a play which will be shown in a Galway theatre. Please email as soon as possible, outlining your experience and the play itself will be chosen based on the core group. Starts 2nd May. Runs 12 weeks with some extra rehearsals at the end. Our Acting in Irish course on Wednesday nights from 6.30 to 9.30pm is specially designed to give experienced actors with school Irish the confidence the chance to up-skill with a view to getting work performing in the Irish language. Students will be gently eased in to working in Irish and we will move from acting games and improvisation to text-based work, with an in-house performance at the end of term. Starts 17th May. Runs for 8 weeks. Cost is €200/185 (student/unemployed) with an early bird rate of €185/170 if you book before 19th April. Tutor is James Riordan.
Write A Play takes place over the course of three intensive Saturday sessions (20th May, 10th June and 8th July, 10am to 5pm) and through detailed online feedback. Workshops are a balance between theory and practice and guide students through the first draft of a play, from generating ideas and fleshing out characters, to structuring a narrative and writing dialogue. Students are left with suggestions on how to further develop the piece and find outlets for showing it. Cost is €250/225, with an early bird rate of €235/210 if you book before 19th April. On Thursday nights, from 6.30 to 8.30pm, we are focusing on the personal development side of things with our new course Presence and Flow: Mindfulness and Creativity through Drama. Much actor-training is to do with heightening awareness of the present moment and finding a calm centred space from which to create a spring board for your imagination. Drawing on a wide variety of acting training techniques, we will explore physical presence and mental focus as well as fun creative exercises! You do not have to have any interest in being an actor to do this course, it’s made for anyone who wants space to themselves to relax and explore their creativity. Course starts 4th May, runs for 6 weeks and costs €120/100 (student/unemployed) with an early bird rate of €110/90 if you book before 19th April. Tutors are Sarah O'Toole and Darragh O'Brien.
