We have three improvers' level Next Stage courses happening this term - all starting the week commencing 24th September. Each of these courses will pick up on a different aspect of what we have covered in Acting 101, but are also perfect for anyone who has done any form of drama course or been on stage before. They give the student (player/performer/artist) the opportunity to focus their attention on a specific performance skill and learn to apply it in front of a live audience. As the classes all happen on different days, there is the opportunity for students who want more intensive training, to do two or all three courses at a discount rates.

All Next Stage Courses culminate in a live showcase performance at the Town Hall Studio.

The Body is Present & the Heart is at Play

Devising Original Work with John Rogers and Zita Monahan- McGowan

Mondays, 7 to 10pm

This 12-session intensive course focuses on helping the players explore and develop how to harness their bodies and their imaginations individually and as a group as a means of devising original theatre work which will then be performed live.

The facilitators (John Rogers, independent theatremaker and Zita Monahan-McGowan, independent theatremaker & Moonfish) have between them a wealth of experience in devising, performing, teaching and workshopping. They will empower and inspire the course participants (who are referred to as players, performers and artists, as opposed to students) to find the creativity that lies in the heart of all of us. The players will further develop their past work on presence and use this experience of finding the best version of themselves onstage to work together to create a performance that is unique to them. The facilitators will use a myriad of theatre exercises, games and theory tailored to foster a challenging and fun environment. They will invite the players to bring their own inspiration from theatre and other art forms and facets of their own lives and the players will be guided in finding their own content and themes. Together with the players, all will learn how to work as an effective ensemble, in the creation of a brand new theatre piece, complete in its beginning, middle and end, which will be performed in the Town Hall Studio on 17th December.

Starts 24th September, Anno Santo Hotel, Salthill, Galway

Cost: €320 or €300 (student/unwaged) with an Early Bird Discount of €300/280 (student/unwaged) if you pay before 17th September.

Improvisation & Comedy

Explore your Funny Side with Sarah O'Toole and Guests

Tuesdays, 7 to 10pm

This 12-session intensive course explores a variety of approaches to comic performance. Students then choose their two favourite styles to work on in preparation for a live comedy showcase at the end of term.

After a very successful pilot term earlier in the year, we're bringing back this wonderful opportunity to explore your funny side with Sarah O'Toole and some special guest lecturers. We loosen our tongues and quicken our wits from the outset with two sessions of comedy improvisation, then we befriend our inner critics and put them to work for us instead of against us as we spend two sessions learning the nuts and bolts of stand-up comedy and even do a bit of writing! We continue with this blend of writing and performance as we spend two sessions creating comedy sketches and we round off our exploration working with classic comedy texts. The final four sessions are spent in rehearsal for our showcase which will be performed in the Town Hall Studio on 18th December.

Starts 25th September, Anno Santo Hotel, Salthill, Galway

Cost: €320 or €300 (student/unwaged) with an Early Bird Discount of €300/280 (student/unwaged) if you pay before 17th September.

Performing The Text

Tackle Challenging Roles in Scenes from Contemporary Plays with Sarah O'Toole

Thursdays, 7 to 10pm

This 12-session intensive course incorporates voice and text work and builds rehearsal skills as students prepare scenes and monologues from exciting contemporary texts for performance.

One of our most popular courses, this has been many a student's first experience performing on stage in front of an audience and we always aim to make it a special one! We have also had many experienced performers who want to hone their skills in taking direction, get more out of reading the script and bring more to the floor in rehearsal.

This term we will be focusing on scenes and monologues from exciting contemporary texts. Over the first couple of sessions, students will be brought through a basic workout to develop their voices which they can practice at home as well. They will also learn how to mine a play text for "actable information" through engagement with Stanislavskian techniques such as the Six Fundamental Questions and Actioning the Text. This reading of the text will then provide the background for a more physical, instinctual exploration through the Chekhov Technique.

Students will then be cast, and the rest of the term will be spent applying what we have learned in rehearsal for a showcase performance which will be performed in the Town Hall Studio on 19th December.

Starts 27th September, Anno Santo Hotel, Salthill, Galway

Cost: €320 or €300 (student/unwaged) with an Early Bird Discount of €300/280 (student/unwaged) if you pay before 17th September.
