This term, after a successful pilot season, we will be continuing with our new Acting 201course - to follow on from and build on the skills encountered in Acting 101, and strengthen the bridge to public performance that takes place in our Next Stage courses.

Of course, students are very welcome to move straight to the Next Stage after completing Acting 101, but we thought it would be nice to offer the option of an extended period of playtime and exploration without the pressure of going on stage!

What makes it even better is that you have the choice of two excellent tutors this term, Maria Tivnan and Conor Geoghegan - as there will be two 6-week cycles of each course. Therefore, if you completed Acting 101 before, you can go straight into Acting 201, and maybe even decide to do a second Acting 201 (as you will be working with a different teacher, which always means a different approach!) Alternatively, you can start with Acting 101, and if you want more, you can then go straight into Acting 201 for the rest of the term.

Both cycles of Acting 101 take place on a Monday night, while our first cycle of Acting 201 will be on a Thursday, with the second cycle taking place on a Monday.

Start dates for Round One are 13th May and 16th May. Both Round Two courses start15th July.

Acting 101

Perfect for anyone who's always wanted to give acting a try, who wants to brush up on past skills, or who just wants to build confidence, have fun and meet people. Your tutor Barry Hopkins will take you through the basics to working with a script in six weeks, with a lot of laughs along the way! Each week will have a different theme - Presence, Where, Character, Relationships, Story and Text - with lots of fun games and group exercises to stimulate imagination and spontaneity and to get students comfortable working together, before moving into pairs for scene work.

By the end of the course, they should have an idea of what to expect if they were cast in a play and have tools to bring their own creativity to bear on the work.

Following on from this, they can go straight into Acting 201, or, depending on what aspect of performance they have enjoyed over the term, there are Next Stage courses to choose from which will enhance their skills and bring them towards their first public performance.

Acting 201

Perfect for anyone who has completed any kind of beginner’s course, and would like to get deeper into the basics before moving towards public performance. Over 6 weeks, your tutors Maria Tivnan and Conor Geoghegan, will introduce you, through fun games and exercises, to some of the most powerful acting techniques in western theatre, while exploring the world of a classic play text. The group will start by reading and discussing a full-length play, and then explore it over the next five weeks through the lenses of great practitioners such as Stanislavsky, Chekhov, Brecht and more. (Please note, each tutor will have a different approach, so they may choose to focus on different styles of work. The good news is that, if you’re really enjoying the first course, you can choose to extend your term by doing both - with the second course at a discounted rate.)

By the end of the course, they will have a more complete view of a play text and many different possibilities for approaching it in performance. This course is also useful for students who are interested in directing theatre.

Following on from this, there are Next Stage courses to choose from which will enhance their skills and bring them towards their first public performance.
